Call Me Hand

Hawaii made it official in 2024: the shaka is the state gesture. Thumb and little finger extended, three middle fingers curled — a greeting that carries aloha, local pride, take it easy, all good. Local tradition traces it to Hamana Kalili of Laie, who lost three fingers working at a sugar mill and whose one-handed wave children copied until it stuck.

Unicode did not name it that. When the character arrived in 2016 it was called "call me hand", after the other thing the same shape does: thumb at the ear, pinky at the mouth, miming the handset of a landline. Both readings are live, and which one a reader receives depends heavily on where they are — surfers and Hawaiians see a shaka, most other people see a phone.

The phone reading is quietly aging out. Nobody under twenty has held a receiver shaped like that, so the gesture's internal logic — this is what a telephone looks like — has stopped being self-evident, in the same way ✉️ for messages and 💾 for saving have. What's left is a friendly hand doing something agreeable, which is roughly how it now gets used: agreement, encouragement, a laid-back yes. If you need "call me" understood as an instruction, the words still do it better.
