Waving Hand

An open hand, tilted, doing the universal thing hands do at a doorway — this emoji says both hello and goodbye, and context is the only thing that tells the two apart. That double duty makes it one of the friendlier emoji: it opens a message warmly and closes one gently, and in tech culture "a little wave" has become shorthand for a soft, non-committal greeting.

It has a sharper edge too. Paired with a name or a curt line, a lone wave can read as a dismissal — the digital equivalent of "bye now" — so tone-reading matters, especially in a workplace chat where the same glyph from a manager lands differently than from a friend. Practically, it takes the six skin tone modifiers like the other hand emoji, so the yellow default is a choice rather than the only form, and it renders with real variation across platforms — some vendors animate the wave, others draw motion lines, a few draw a static open palm. If a wave in your message feels flat, that flatness may be the recipient's font, not your intent.
