On 19 August 1839, in Paris, the working instructions for Daguerre's photographic process were published and handed to the world for nothing. Silver on a copper plate, sensitised with iodine, developed over mercury fumes, one unrepeatable image per exposure โ€” no negative, so no second copy. France had bought the process from Daguerre for a lifetime pension and then gave it away. Every country got it free except one: five days earlier, on 14 August, a patent agent named Miles Berry had filed British patent No. 8194 on Daguerre's behalf, and Britain alone had to license what the rest of the world was handed.

That is the date this week is pegged to, and ๐Ÿ“ท turns out to have its own story about giving something away.

Unicode did not design this camera. It standardised one that already existed several times over. When U+1F4F7 landed in Unicode 6.0 in October 2010 it arrived with a compatibility obligation attached: EmojiSources.txt, the file that records where the first emoji came from, maps this codepoint to a DoCoMo code, a KDDI code and a SoftBank code all at once. Three rival Japanese carriers had each shipped their own camera pictograph, and a message sent on one network had to survive being read on another. Encoding a camera was not an aesthetic decision. It was a round-trip requirement.

Which goes some way to explaining the shape. Those pictographs were drawn under real constraints โ€” DoCoMo's original 1999 set, the one the Museum of Modern Art later acquired, was built on a grid twelve pixels square. Whether or not a camera was in that first batch, the constraint is legible in the form everyone settled on: a rectangle, a circle in the middle of it, a hump on top for the flash housing, a nub at the corner for the shutter release. Remove any one of those four and it stops reading as a camera at all.

There is a hole in the standard right beside it, too. Unicode 6.0 assigned characters up to U+1F4F7 CAMERA, skipped the next number entirely, and picked up again at U+1F4F9 VIDEO CAMERA. U+1F4F8 sat unassigned for nearly four years until Unicode 7.0 in June 2014 filled it with CAMERA WITH FLASH โ€” the same box, with strokes radiating off one corner โ€” and it was only listed as emoji-by-default in the first numbered emoji release the year after that. The flash arrived late, into a gap that had been left open next to the camera the whole time.

The odd part is where you are reading this. If you took a photograph this month, there is a decent chance it was taken by the same object now drawing you a boxy compact with a lens barrel: a machine you probably no longer own. Nobody minds, because an icon was never obliged to resemble the thing you would actually reach for. It has to be recognisable at the size of a letter, which is a different job. The floppy disk has been doing that same job on save buttons for decades after the last one was ejected.

Which brings it back to 1839. What France gave away in August was never the pictures โ€” those stayed slow, expensive and singular. It gave away the method: the instructions, published, for anyone to follow. A codepoint is that kind of gift. U+1F4F7 is not a picture of a camera, it is a number with an agreement attached, and the drawing is left to whoever is doing the rendering. Apple's camera and Google's camera and Samsung's camera have never been the same image. The standard hands over the instruction and lets everyone else do the developing.
